Clevedon Pier – Passenger access for sailings

The Severn Estuary has the second highest tidal range in the world with a difference in height of up to 47 feet (or 14 metres) at the high spring tides.

As a result access to ships for sailings from Clevedon Pier is by several flights of open steep steps depending upon the state of the tide at the time of the sailing.

At low tide there can be five flights of steps whereas at high tide there may be only one flight. The Pier was built in 1869 and the current Pier Head was built in 1893 when access requirements were more rudimentary.

Passengers should please consider this when making their arrangements for sailings to or from Clevedon Pier as assistance for those who may have difficulty negotiating the steps at busy times, embarking or disembarking, may not be readily available. Unfortunately it is not possible to allow passengers to wait at lower levels of the Pier Head before the ships berth.

The photo below is taken at an extreme low tide showing the flights of steps and the jetty at the end of the pier.
